CASE STUDY / SOCIAL INNOVATION & COMMUNITY BUILDING

Manchester Social Entrepreneurs

Building a place for people with social enterprise ideas to meet, share knowledge and find practical support.

The challenge

People trying to start or grow a social enterprise need more than advice in isolation. They need peers, useful introductions and a place to test ideas with others who understand the balance between commercial viability and social purpose.

George founded Manchester Social Entrepreneurs in 2014 after finding no local place to share knowledge and connect with like-minded people, according to his Greater Manchester Combined Authority profile.

Building a community for social entrepreneurship in Manchester

George founded the group, produced events, facilitated workshops and advised early-stage founders.

How the community worked

The group brought together people interested in social impact and sustainability to discuss their projects, ideas and concerns. Its event record includes open conversations, cross-sector collaboration and practical venture topics such as market research and business models.

The format made peer exchange and introductions part of the support, with members and fellow organisers contributing to the community over time.

Evidence of reach

  • Meetup lists 47 past events for the group.
  • The public group page showed more than 1,400 members when reviewed in October 2026.
  • GMCA identifies George as its founder; Meetup lists him among the organisers.

Membership is a changing platform count, not a measure of active participation or venture impact. The event and membership totals belong to the community and its organisers collectively.
